LEDs Dominate The Conversation On The Audi E-Tron Sportback Concept

Most concept vehicles are largely created because the automaker wants to promote something for future production vehicles. That formula has been tried and tested so many years that it’s become normal for people like us to expect them. Such is the case with Audi’s new E-Tron Sportback Concept, which is actually promoting a lot of things, not the least of which is the company’s overarching electric crossover agenda. But there is one aspect about the E-Tron Sportback Concept that Audi really wants us to pay attention to. It’s the LED lights, and for what they’re all worth, there are a lot of them.

Audi hasn’t said exactly how many light emitting diodes the concept has at its disposal, but the front bumper alone has around 250 LEDs that extend from one end of the bumper to the other. More LEDs are located on either side of the grille, including Audi’s actual four rings logo. Yes, the Audi logo is made from LEDs, and that’s not even counting the number of LEDs that have been packed on both the headlights and taillights.

According to Audi, the LEDs were added to the concept to showcase different lighting patterns that we may or may not see in future production models. These patterns work to communicate with other cars on the road, which itself is a novelty that could find its way on a production model of the coupe-crossover concept should it get that far.

The smart money is to wait and see how the technology evolves from here on out. These many LEDs may look good on a concept, but the costs of packing all of them on a production model could determine whether they’re feasible or not. Make no mistake though, the visual appeal of all these lights on a concept is evident; the only question is whether Audi deems them reasonable enough to become fixtures – no pun intended – on its future models.

Jeep Joining The Hybrid Bandwagon Is Proof That The Hybrid Revolution Is In Full Swing

Some automakers are synonyms with specific characteristics. Ferrari and Lamborghini are synonymous with Italian power and performance. Rolls-Royce and Bentley are quintessential marquees known for their opulence and luxury. Then there’s Jeep, which is known for its ruggedness and off-road capabilities. It figures then that when news first broke in 2015 that Jeep was going hybrid with some of its models, it was, to say the least, jarring to the senses. Fast forward to the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show and we finally get to see what a Jeep hybrid looks like in the form of the Yuntu, a three-row, seven-seater, full-sized SUV concept that’s laying the groundwork for a new era in the company’s long and illustrious history.

To be clear, there’s no official word yet from Jeep about the production prospects of the Yuntu Concept. There is, however, a strong possibility that we’re headed in that direction anyway. Remember, Jeep CEO Mike Manley has been a strong advocate of dipping the company in the hybrid market, most recently confirming at the 2017 Geneva Motor Showthe arrival of a hybrid version of the Wrangler. The Yuntu, of course, is far different from the Wrangler, both in aesthetics and purpose. But the mere sight of the concept in Shanghai is an indication that the brand has a more elaborate hybrid plan that will involve numerous models receiving this specific powertrain. Just goes to show how brand images are now giving way to addressing the future of the auto industry.

Honda Shows up to Goodwood with a Unique interpretation of the Civic Type R

We all know that human and machine are becoming one. People can’t put down their smartphones for two seconds, Grandpa is walking around with a pacemaker to keep his heart going, and it’s only a matter of time before we’re able to replace our limbs with full-fledged robotic counterparts. Elon Musk is even doubling down on his notion of connecting the human brain directly to computers with his newest company, Neuralink. It’s only a matter of time before we can transfer human consciousness and become a race of sentient cyborg beings hellbent on spreading our archaic ideals across the galaxy and conquering the universe. Okay, so, that’s a bit too much, but there’s no denying that the gap between human and machine is getting increasingly smaller, and Honda has taken this idea into its own hands by creating a Honda Civic Type R and the Fireblade bike out of humans. That’s right; Humans.

It’s all a big show to celebrate the kicking off of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, and you have to admit, it’s one of the most creative ways to do so. All told, 12 performance artists manage to intertwine themselves enough to generate the basic silhouette of the Civic Type R and the Fireblade bike. The whole thing has been orchestrated by the Honda Challenge Lab, a self-proclaimed “playground of extraordinary ideas inspiring curiosity and learning.” Needless to say, if you happen to be checking out the festival this year, the Honda booth is one place you certainly want to visit – it’s not very often you see a group of people shaping themselves into vehicles.

Prepare Yourselves For The Wienerfleet!

If there was ever the perfect vehicle that helps capture America’s Independence Day festivities, it has to be Oscar Meyer’s famed Wienermobile. Unveiled in its original form back in 1936, the Wienermobile has served as the official automotive mascot for the Kraft Heinz-owned meat and cold cut production company. Of course, the hotdog-on-a-bun-shaped vehicle has evolved over the years, even welcoming the WienerMini and the WienerRover. But now the family is growing even more with the addition of two new models, the WienerCycle and the WienerDrone.

The WienerCycle is what it says it is. It’s a three-wheeled moped that carries the same hotdog-on-a-bun look as its big brothers. It doesn’t do much in the way of power – it only has 8.5 horsepower on tap – but it does have the capacity to carry and hold up as much as eight hot dogs in its sidecar warming station. Then there’s the WienerDrone, without question the most incredible-looking of all members of WienerFleet. Not only is it the world’s first ever “unmanned hot dog-carrying aircraft,” but it also brings to life our dreams of one day seeing hot dogs raining down from the sky. It can only travel up to a mile at altitudes of 1,200 feet, but that’s besides the point. The WienerDrone and WienerCycle make our childhood fantasy come to life.

Russian Mechanics Show Us How To Make A Car Version Of The Fidget Spinner

In today’s news from the oddities of the auto industry, I present to you unusual yet entertaining video provided by YouTubers in Russia. With fidget spinners being the latest fad, some Russian mechanics took that craze to a new level by actually welding three cars together in the shape of those spinners. The goal it seems is to make them spin just like their small counterparts, and while credit is deserved for actually creating something similar, everything else that happens probably wasn’t the intended outcome.

So let’s stage the scene. Three run-down, front-wheel drive hatchbacks were cut in half. The front sections of all three cars were welded together in the now recognizable shape of these fidget spinners. Once that part of the project was done, three drivers got behind the wheel of the three cars and tried to simulate the furious spinning of these spinners. The only problem is the three cars distribute different levels of power, causing the whole creation to resemble something akin to an automotive version of “demolition derby meets tug-of-war.” Undaunted, two of the drivers decided to step out of their cars and let the one driver do the spinning. He managed to do a couple of spins, but nowhere near the furious spinning these fidget spinners are capable of. Ultimately, the ridiculous project wasn’t without its merits. Being able to create an auto version of a fidget spinner is fairly remarkable, and while it probably would’ve been better if it spun the way it was intended, you have to give points for effort.

A Historical Look At The Goodwood Festival Of Speed’s Center Feature Sculptures

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start writing!

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a lot of things to a lot of people. For some, it’s the one auto event in the calendar year that really celebrates the history of the auto industry. For others, it’s a spectacle of some of the finest race cars and performance cars in history. Then there are those who go to the event just to see what the vibe is like. No matter where you fall in any of these groups, there’s an underlying agreement that nothing encapsulates the Goodwood Festival of Speed more than the event’s central feature, which traditionally takes the form of massive sculptures commissioned by automakers that are chosen by event organizers. More often than not, these companies are chosen if they’re celebrating a particular milestone that year.

The central feature has become a prominent fixture at the Goodwood Festival of Speed since 1997 when Ferrari was invited to serve as the marque of the event. Over the next two decades, a who’s who of the world’s top automakers have taken center stage with their own central features. Companies like Jaguar, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Renault have been featured more than twice, while other companies like BMW, Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Ford, Lotus, and Alfa Romeo have had their turns as well. In fact, since 1997, this year marks the very first time that the event’s central feature will be about a person, not an automaker. Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is going to be given that honor, a fitting nod to the man who brought the glitz and glamor back to Formula One.

Subaru WRX STI – Driven

Those television commercials say Subarus are made from love. That’s only the case if we’re talking about the love of motorsports and rally racing. See, generations of Subarus, most notably the Impreza WRX and WRX STI models, have taken home World Rally Championship trophies from events around the world. Thankfully, Subaru injects this racing pedigree into the production version of its WRX models, making them some of the best performing, all-weather and terrain racing machines on the planet. And now for 2018, the WRX and WRX STI receive a slight cosmetic refresh paired with a handful of mechanical upgrades.

I recently spent a few days with a 2018 WRX STI Limited painted in that lovely WR Blue Pearl hue. At first glance, the acid-green brake calipers and tall rear wing command the eye’s attention. But looking deeper, you’ll see the front grille is ever so slightly more aggressive than before. A new set of 19-inch, Y-spoke wheels are new, as are those bright brake calipers and the larger rotors they squeeze. Things inside change little, too, through the small changes make big improvements in comfort. A larger information screen atop the dash has new graphics, the StarLink Infotainment system now measures 7.0 inches, the rear seat gets a folding center armrest with cup holders, the door panels have new grab handles, and road noise is hushed thanks to thicker side glass and added insulation. Mechanically, Subaru gave the STI a new fully electronic center differential that’s said to work faster than the previous mechanical and electrical DCCD. Sadly, Subaru chose not to completely rework the WRX STI onto the Impreza’s new-for-2017 chassis. Even the 2.5-liter Boxer engine remains untouched at 305 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. But does this dull the rally-inspired driving experience. Hardly. Keep reading to find out more.

Get Your Simplified Lightness On With The Lotus Exige Cup 380

Lotus has been pumping out successively quicker iterations of the Exige for several years now, including the Sport 350 unveiled in 2015, and the Sport 380 that dropped early last year. The latest is this – the Exige Cup 380, a car Lotus is calling the “ultimate track-and-back street-legal Lotus.” Essentially an even more focused iteration of the Sport 380, the Cup 380 once again strives for that tried-and-true Lotus performance philosophy, striking a balance between street-legal road car and track-burning race car. It’s a lithe supercar killer sporting revised aero and even less weight, making for a spec sheet absolutely worthy of the green and yellow badge glued to the nose.

The big selling point here is the car’s power-to-weight ratio, with 355 horsepower available to motivate 1 metric ton (2,205 pounds) of curb weight. That means it’ll hit 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds, while top speed is rated at 175 mph. But, in addition to lots of straight-line performance, the Lotus also offers lots of stick, generating as much as 200 kg (441 pounds) at speed thanks to an extensive rework of the exterior wings and spoilers. That’s an increase of 43 percent compared to the Exige Sport 380, and combined with more rubber in the rear, the Cup 380 should be an absolute riot on the track. Read on for more info.
